The setting spray is, at least I think, a relatively new entry into the world of makeup. Back in my modelling days I remember having a makeup artist spray hairspray on my face to keep my makeup in place before shoots, but until the last couple of years that was as much as we could hope for, and it wasn’t really useful for everyday.
And up until 2 weeks ago, I’d only sampled drugstore setting sprays. They do the job – preventing my mascara from falling off and my eyeshadows from creasing. But they didn’t stop my foundation from separating, or melt into my skin whilst blending all my powder products together seemlessly. My favourite was the L’Oreal Infallible 24hr Setting Spray, but even that didn’t spray too finely. It does smell really nice though!
I’d always wanted to try the MAC Prep + Prime Fix+ setting spray. Sylvia Gani is one of my favourite YouTubers, and she swears by the stuff. MAC is one of the top tier makeup brands I use, although I mostly own lipsticks and a couple of eyeliners from them. The quality is always next to none. So when I found myself with a handy discount code, I went in for a bit of a splurge and knew the one product I’d have to pick up was some Fix+ setting spray. But as it turns out, there’s a whole new range of Fix+ sprays!
The original Fix+ is a clear liquid, which sprays a fine mist onto your skin. This melts into your makeup, keeping it set in place all day. There are 5 new varieties of this. The first 3 are lightly coloured, scented versions, available in coconut, rose, or lavender scent. I intend to pick up at least one of these in future. But as I already own a couple of clear setting sprays, I opted for the more exciting of the launches. The wonderful artist in the shop gave me a demonstration of the shimmer shades, and I opted for the shade “Goldlight”. It’s got all the benefits of the original formula, but is infused with a golden, pearly shimmer.
And it is absolutely beautiful!
This is certainly a product which lives up to it’s hype. It sprays so finely, feels so refreshing and comfortable, and melts into your skin. The cakey-ness that powder residues leave melts away and blends into your skin, leaving a flawless, airbrushed looking finish to your face. As a setting spray, it works perfectly. It extends the wear time of your makeup, keeps it perfectly in place, and stops foundation from separating, mascara from falling, and eyeshadow from creasing. Perfect!
The shimmer is also perfectly blended into the final product – it leaves a beautiful glow rather than obvious spots of glitter on your face. It can be used both as a primer and a setting spray, so perfect for giving you that “lit from within” glow. I use it primarily as a setting spray, but also love it as a standalone product on those makeup free days. It brightens and refreshes bare skin, and gives that “I woke up like this” look. It’s confidence in a bottle for those days you don’t have time, or it’s not a makeup occasion, like going to the gym.
It’s beautifully packaged, in a huge clear bottle that lets you see the product directly, and with exaggerated gold lettering that really highlights the product itself. The box the product is packaged in keeps with MACs uniform sleek, black packaging, with a beautiful holographic shimmer that just looks so cool. The bottle cap and pump are easy to manoeuvre, with a simple twist to activate the pump, preventing any accidental leaks. And with 100ml of product, it’s worth the £19 price point. I’ve been using it for 2 weeks, and it looks like I’ve used barely any.
The only problem I do have is that’s it’s not a handy size to travel with, or pop into your handbag for refreshing spritzes when you need a touch up. There is a mini version of the original Fix+, so I may have to grab myself a bottle of that for handbag use. And until they update the mini selection, we live in hope!
Overall, I really recommend this product. It’s the ultimate setting spray, feels lovely to use and does what it needs to, with the added bonus of a natural-looking glow. And you get tonnes of product for £19. Yes, it’s a bit pricey. But I think it’s more than worth the money.
